 WELCOME AND INVOCATION

Pastor Sheryl Myers

CONGREGATIONAL HYMN: OLD RUGGED CROSS:

On a hill far away stood an old rugged cross
The emblem of suffering and shame
And I love that old cross

where the dearest and best
For a world of lost sinners was slain

So I’ll cherish the old rugged cross

Till my trophies at last I lay down
I will cling to the old rugged cross
And exchange it some day for a crown

SCRIPTURE READING: MARK 15:1-25

BRAD CAVINESS

Very early in the morning, the chief priests, with the elders, the teachers of the law and the whole Sanhedrin, made their plans. So they bound Jesus, led him away and handed him over to Pilate.

“Are you the king of the Jews?” asked Pilate.

“You have said so,” Jesus replied.

The chief priests accused him of many things. So again Pilate asked him, “Aren’t you going to answer? See how many things they are accusing you of.” But Jesus still made no reply, and Pilate was amazed.

Now it was the custom at the festival to release a prisoner whom the people requested. A man called Barabbas was in prison with the insurrectionists who had committed murder in the uprising. The crowd came up and asked Pilate to do for them what he usually did.

“Do you want me to release to you the king of the Jews?” asked

Pilate, knowing it was out of self-interest that the chief priests had handed Jesus over to him. But the chief priests stirred up the crowd to have Pilate release Barabbas instead.

“What shall I do, then, with the one you call the king of the Jews?” Pilate asked them.

“Crucify him!” they shouted.

“Why? What crime has he committed?” asked Pilate.

But they shouted all the louder, “Crucify him!”

Wanting to satisfy the crowd, Pilate released Barabbas to them. He had Jesus flogged, and handed him over to be crucified.

The soldiers led Jesus away into the palace (that is, the Praetorian) and called together the whole company of soldiers. They put a purple robe on him, then twisted together a crown of thorns and set it on him. And they began to call out to him, “Hail, king of the Jews!” Again and again they struck him on the head with a staff and spit on him. Falling on their knees, they paid homage to him. And when they had mocked him, they took off the purple robe and put his own clothes on him. Then they led him out to crucify him.

A certain man from Cyrene, Simon, the father of Alexander and Rufus, was passing by on his way in from the country, and they forced him to carry the cross. They brought Jesus to the place called Golgotha (which means “the place of the skull”). Then they offered him wine mixed with myrrh, but he did not take it. And they crucified him. Dividing up his clothes, they cast lots to see what each would get.

It was nine in the morning when they crucified him.

SPECIAL MUSIC:  ABOVE ALL:

 PRAISE TEAM & CONGREGATION

Above all power, above all kings Above all nature and all created things
Above all wisdom and all the ways of man
You were here before the world began.
Above all kingdom, above all thrones
Above all wonders the world has ever known
Above all wealth and treasures of the earth
There’s no way to measure what you’re worth
Crucified, Laid behind a stone
You lived to die, rejected and alone
Like a rose, trampled on the ground
You took the fall, And thought of me, Above all

LAST WORDS OF JESUS FROM THE CROSS EXTINGUISHING OF THE CANDLES

THE SEVEN SAYINGS OF THE SAVIOR ON THE CROSS
1. WORD OF FORGIVENESS
Then said Jesus, “Father, forgive them; for they know not what they do”
2. THE WORD OF SALVATION
And he said unto Jesus, “Lord, remember me when you come
into your kingdom” and Jesus said unto him,
“Very truly I say unto you, today you shall be with me in paradise.”
3. THE WORD OF AFFECTION
Now there stood by the cross of Jesus His mother. When Jesus saw
his mother, and the disciple standing by, whom he loved, He said unto
His mother, “Woman, behold your son!” Then He said to the disciple,
“Behold your mother!”
4. THE WORD OF ANGUISH
And about the ninth hour Jesus cried with a loud voice saying.
“Eli, Eli, lama sabachthani?”
That is to say, “My God, My God, why have you forsaken me?”
5. THE WORD OF SUFFERING
Jesus knowing that all things were now accomplished,
that the scripture might be fulfilled, said, “I thirst.”
6. THE WORD OF VICTORY
When Jesus had received the vinegar, He said, “It is finished.”
7. THE WORD OF CONTENTMENT
And when Jesus had cried with a loud voice, He said, “Father, into your
hands I commend My spirit;” and having said this, He gave up His spirit
